How does an OV-chipkaart work

The Public transport chipcard is a map with which you can travel by public transport in the Netherlands, think oftrain, tram, metro and bus transport. By charging the card with a balance or purchase a subscription, you can travel with the Public transport chipcard. You must check in at the beginning of your trip and check out again at the end.

What kind of Public transport chipcards are there

There are two different public transport chipcards, namely: the personal OV-chipkaart and an anonymous OV-chipkaart. The personal OV-chipkaart can be identified by the color yellow and the picture of the owner on the card. For example, this OV-chipkaart cannot be lent to anyone else, because it is personal. An anonymous OV-chipkaart can be recognized by the color blue. With this pass it is possible to borrow. Because it is not personal, only a card number and the validity of the card have been described. You can also buy disposable tickets from a number of carriers.

  • From production date, the anonymous OV-chipkaart is valid for 5 years.
  • 5 years valid

How do I charge my OV-chipkaart

To travel by public transport, you must first charge your OV-chipkaart with a balance (an amount in euros) or travel product OV-chipkaart, such as a day card or subscription. You do this at a vending machine or desk.

Entry fee for OV-chipkaart

When you travel on balance, an entry fee of your balance will be depreciated at the check-in of ov-chipkaart. Upon check-out, the kilometres travelled will be charged and the boarding fee will be refunded. If you don’t check out, you’ll pay the full boarding pass.

* Good to know that the entry fee on some lines of Connexxion is € 6, € 10 or € 15 and on some lines of Bravo in Brabant € 8. For all current entry-level rates, please visit your carrier’s website.

OV-chipkaart balance

There are several ways to check the balance of your OV-chipkaart. Namely, one of the way is to check the balance online. Another way can be checked at an OV-automatic. These vending machines can be found in supermarkets and in the train station itself.

How to block an OV-chipkaart online

Personal OV-chipkaart:

Remember that a blocked card cannot be unblocked.

Log in and block your card through your account, then the following steps are taken:

 

  1. OV-chipkaart kaartuitgever blocks your card;
  2. You apply for a replacement card. The replacement card costs €11,-. You pay this amount through IDEAL.
  3. You end up ending the old card and ask for the remaining balance back.
  4. The subscription will automatically charge on your replacement card
  5. The remaining balance of your old card will be transferred to your bank account within 15 days.
  6. Within average three working days you will receive your replacement OV-chipkaart.

If you don’t have an account, you can contact the customer service OV-chipkaart 0900-0980 (usual call fees). The employee immediately blocks your card. For balance refund and payment of the replacement card, you need to have your bank account number on hand


Anonymous OV-chipkaart:

Anonymous OV-chipcards are not protected from abuse, unlike personal cards. These cannot be blocked and replaced either.

OV-chipkaart lost

Have you lost or stolen your OV-chipkaart? Report this to OV-chipkaart as soon as possible. When you report lost or stolen card, your card will be blocked within 24 hours. This can be easily arranged via your OV-chipkaartaccount account or call OV-chipkaart customer service 0900-0980 (usual call costs). Anonymous cards cannot be blocked.

When signing up, you can replace or terminate your card and request your balance back. The replacement costs of the replacement card are €11,-. Anonymous cards cannot be blocked.
